Positive train
control
The Lockheed Martin Rail Systems business is applying
advanced technologies and proven systems development and
integration methodologies to develop and deploy the Positive
Train Control (PTC) System. PTC is equivalent to Level 3 ERTMS
and provides a cost-effective means for both freight and
passenger railways to manage train movements by assessing
occupancy and speed limits, monitoring and controlling wayside
systems and exchanging instructions and messages with
locomotives. The system also includes the control of level
crossings and the protection of railway workers.
The PTC project enables the railway industry to increase
running-time reliability, track capacity, improve safety and
allow for high-speed passenger trains, resulting in cost
reductions and increased efficiency. US railways are currently
considering upgrade to PTC and Lockheed Martin is leading one
such upgrade in Illinois and has started another in Australia.
Our PTC solutions are being applied to a variety of US, UK,
Canadian, European, Australian and Asian rail business
opportunities.
