London Area Control
Centre (LACC)

The new Swanwick centre became operational in the early hours of
Sunday 27 January 2002. The air traffic control system is housed
in a state-of-the-art facility near Fareham, Hampshire. As Prime
Contractor, Lockheed Martin took responsibility for programme
management, key software development and systems integration of
23 safety-critical subsystems.
The Lockheed Martin delivered system provides approximately
200 air traffic workstations, including some 135 controller
workstations and 60-plus supervisor stations, with advanced air
traffic management capabilities and ergonomic features. Now
operational, the 2000sqm air traffic operations room is the
largest of its kind in Europe. The Swanwick centre is
responsible for controlling UK airspace for the London Flight
Information Region, covering airspace over England (just off the
border with Scotland), Wales and the surrounding seas.
Lockheed Martin Transportation and Security Solutions in the UK
Combining systems integration expertise with extensive air traffic
control experience, Lockheed Martin Transportation and Security
Solutions is working with the UK’s National Air Traffic Services
Ltd. (NATS) in order to meet the UK’s demand for increased airspace
capacity well into the 21st century. As prime contractor, LM helped
NATS to field the world’s largest and most advanced en-route air
traffic management system at Swanwick, Hampshire. Now in its fifth
year of operations, the system continues to perform well and is
supported by NATS and LM joint and integrated engineering and
software development teams based at NATS Corporate and Technical
Centre at Whiteley, Hampshire.
