Lockheed Martin
Aeronautics Company recently completed the first
phase of flight testing of its new conformal fuel
tanks (CFTs) for its F-16 multirole fighter.
Flight testing with
aerodynamic shapes was conducted on an F-16C at
Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., from March through
August. A total of 24 test flights and 65 flight
test hours were accomplished, and testing involved
loads, flutter, and stability and control.

Israel
Signs Agreement for 52 More Lockheed Martin F-16s

Israel signed an
amendment to a letter of offer and acceptance (LOA)
with the U.S. government for 52 more F-16I fighters
on September 4.
This agreement
follows the announcement at the Paris Air Show in
June of Israel’s intent to exercise an option for
more F-16s. These aircraft are in addition to the 50
F-16I aircraft ordered in January 2000 and were an
option to that order.

begun a joint test program with the U.S. Air Force
and the U.S. Army to validate the C-130J-30 for
paratroop airdrop operations. The tests are being
conducted by the Airborne and Special Operations
Test Directorate at Fort Bragg N.C. They are being
flown out of Pope Air Force Base N.C., home of the
43rd Airlift Wing.

Squadron Leader Justin Paines has
become the first Royal Air Force pilot to evaluate
the vertical takeoff, hover and vertical landing
performance of the supersonic Lockheed Martin Joint
Strike Fighter X-35B.
Paines, a
Harrier pilot who was selected to test the X-35
demonstrator aircraft for the United Kingdom, roared
into the air with a series of three hovers for a
total of eight and a half minutes at the Lockheed
Martin plant in Palmdale, Calif., on June 30.

On 25 June 2001, the
Lockheed Martin Team’s supersonic Joint Strike
Fighter, the X-35B, piloted by BAE SYSTEMS test
pilot Simon Hargreaves, took off vertically,
maintained a hover for about two minutes and landed
vertically. The event was a first for a JSF
demonstrator – the latest in a series of tests by
the Lockheed Martin Team to validate the
revolutionary new shaft-driven lift fan propulsion
system.

November 22nd last year the X-35A, which
was the LM/NGC/BAE SYSTEMS Conventional Concept
Demonstration Aircraft, made it’s 27th
and final flight to conclude a tremendously
successful flight test phase which demonstrated the
outstanding handling qualities, performance and
reliability of the basic CTOL aeroplane. On that
final flight, after a brief supersonic run, Chief
Test Pilot Tom Morgenfeld brought the aircraft
safely ‘home’ to the LM Skunk Works at Palmdale,
California.

Corporation (NYSE: LMT) today reported fourth
quarter 2000 net earnings per diluted share of
$0.21, compared to fourth quarter 1999 net earnings
per diluted share of $0.76. Fourth quarter 2000
results were reduced by $68 million, or $0.17 per
share, for the combined effects of an after-tax
extraordinary charge of $95 million, or $0.23 per
share, relating to an early extinguishment of debt,
partially offset by an increase to net income of $27
million, or $0.06 per share, related to certain
other nonrecurring and unusual items. Nonrecurring
and unusual items contributed $0.17 per share to
fourth quarter 1999 results. Excluding the
aforementioned items, comparable fourth quarter
earnings per share would have been $0.38 for 2000
and $0.59 for 1999.

The United Kingdom's
new air traffic control system, developed by
Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management (LMATM), has
moved one significant step closer to operational
service with the successful handover of the New En
Route Centre (NERC) system to the UK National Air
Traffic Services (NATS) controllers on December 19.
Located at Swanwick, in Southern England, the NERC
air traffic control system will control all en route
traffic over England and Wales.
