LOCKHEED MARTIN'S CLOSE AIR DEFENCE DETACHMENT ENGAGEMENT TRAINER (CADDET) ACCEPTED INTO SERVICE BY MOD

21 February 2002

LONDON , United Kingdom – 21 February 2002 - Lockheed Martin’s Close Air Defence Detachment Engagement Trainer (CADDET), procured by the Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) Integrated Project Team (IPT) of the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA), today was formally handed over to the British Army. A contract valued at around £8m GBP was placed with Lockheed Martin Information Systems in April 2000 for the Demonstration, Manufacture and Initial Support of 2 Type A and 22 Type B systems. Lockheed Martin Information Systems achieved the CADDET In Service Date ahead of schedule in November 2001.

CADDET provides high-fidelity extended training to detachments with a dedicated training instructor on the high velocity missile (HVM) weapon system and consists of two versions. The Type A system is a semi-permanent system (i.e., classroom trainer) whereas Type B is deployable in the field, enabling skill fade to be minimised and reducing disruption to the soldier’s routine. . The systems can display a variety of terrains. For each terrain display there are a range of weather conditions and computer-generated and projected “2.5D photographic backgrounds” with superimposed 3-D images of aircraft targets, as well as sight inject views for simulated binoculars and the gunner’s missile aiming sight.

“This is a great achievement for the entire programme team who have demonstrated excellent teamwork and commitment in delivering this system ahead of schedule. Lockheed Martin has been able to achieve this early completion because of a seamless team partnering relationship with the customer throughout and our opportunity to maximise the re-use of our core design; therefore minimising risk to the programme. As a consequence Lockheed Martin offers customers the very best training solutions, with a faster and quicker route to final delivery, wholly in line with their expectations for Best Value For Money solutions” said Graham McIntyre, Managing Director, Lockheed Martin UK Information Systems. “This work now positions Lockheed Martin Information Systems with the very latest and advanced capabilities in missile modelling design which we can now apply to the full breadth of missile training needs not only in the UK , but internationally.”

“The DPA and user are very pleased with the performance of Lockheed Martin UK Information Systems during Demonstration and Manufacture and in the delivery of a trainer that will provide the Royal Marines’ and British Army’s future synthetic training needs for close air defence Operator and Tactical training,” said GBAD IPT Leader Air Commodore Richard Moore.

The CADDET systems will allow the Army to conduct realistic tactical and operator engagement drills with the Shoulder Launched and Lightweight Multiple Launcher variants of the High Velocity Missile (HVM) System without the associated expense and environmental hazards of firing actual missiles.

Combining the key elements of missile modelling, including launch, gather and acquisition control coupled with associated weight loss, audio and high-fidelity visual operator cueing, CADDET provides significant training enhancements over similar products. Developed in an open architecture, object-orientated environment, the company is well positioned to offer low risk, best value for money opportunities in all air defence and anti-tank virtual missile training solutions that maximises reuse and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies.

Lockheed Martin Information Systems is the world’s leading specialist company in providing training solutions and services to the armed forces of the world. Lockheed Martin UK Information Systems, the UK operating division of Lockheed Martin Information Systems, offers virtual, live and constructive solutions within the simulation continuum.
