Lockheed Martin Team wins Joint Strike Fighter Competition

26 October 2001

  • Over 14 Leading UK Aerospace companies have a major stake in the winning design

  • Creates 3,400 UK jobs during SDD and over 8,400 UK jobs during production and £27 billion of work for UK companies

  • Secures future of UK military aircraft industry

The Pentagon announced this evening that an international team led by Lockheed Martin with partners BAE SYSTEMS and Northrop Grumman has won the competition to build the Joint Strike Fighter, a stealthy, supersonic aircraft designed for the US Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps., as well as the UK’s Royal Air Force and Royal Navy to replace the Harrier, F-14, F-16, F/A-18 and A-10 aircraft.

The team of Lockheed Martin, BAE SYSTEMS and Northrop Grumman will produce an initial 22 aircraft in the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase. Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce will supply major propulsion-system components for the aircraft, while General Electric is developing an alternate engine. US and UK plans call for more than 3,000 aircraft over the life of the programme.

"We are grateful that the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have put their faith in the Lockheed Martin team, and we intend to honour that trust by building a truly remarkable, capable and affordable 21st-century fighter aircraft on schedule and on cost," said Vance D. Coffman, chairman and chief executive officer, Lockheed Martin Corporation. "I am personally committed to making this programme and absolute success by remaining flexible and working closely with our customers as requirements evolve."

United Kingdom technology figured heavily in the JSF design, and UK test pilots and flight engineers were instrumental in demonstrating that technology. BAE SYSTEMS is involved in the vital areas of mission systems, vehicle systems, autonomic logistics and airframes.

In the United Kingdom alone, the Lockheed Martin JSF team will create approximately 3,400 jobs during System Development and Demonstration (SDD); and during the 30 year production and support phase 8,400 direct, and many thousands more indirect, long term, highly skilled, highly paid jobs will be created. The production of 3,000 aircraft will generate approximately £27 billion for UK companies during System Development and Demonstration; and Production and Support. Current international export projections for an additional 3,000 aircraft could mean an extra £24 billion for UK companies over the life of the programme. Additional long-term UK business opportunities exist through major roles in spares production, design evolutions and upgrade programmes.

Defence Procurement Minister, Lord Bach, commented: "JSF is set to be the largest military acquisition programme in history. Our continuing participation alongside the US in this programme is thus a major benefit both to Britain’s Armed Forces and British industry.

"British industry has gained its place in the Lockheed Martin team on merit in a demanding competitive environment, and now has a tremendous opportunity to show what it can do."

BAE SYSTEMS has worked closely with the Lockheed Martin team for the past five years throughout the Concept Demonstrator Phase of the programme. "We are pleased that the Joint Strike Fighter programme has chosen the Lockheed Martin team and its aircraft, for this very important programme," said John Weston, chief executive, BAE SYSTEMS. "The significance of this programme for UK armed forces is that the combination of Eurofighter and JSF enables the UK to field 21st-century capabilities in its defence and the defence of its allies."

"Industrially, this programme will ensure thousands of jobs throughout the UK, now and in the future, as these aircraft are developed, produced and then supported and modified through their life cycle with the forces," he added.
