LOCKHEED MARTIN UK INTEGRATED SYSTEMS
21 July 2000
Lockheed Martin has renamed its UK Government Systems Ltd
business unit based in Portsmouth to Lockheed Martin UK
Integrated Systems (LM UKIS). The change is effective
immediately. Peter Schultz, President of Lockheed Martin UKIS,
said "We have made this decision in order to directly align our
company with our core capability of systems integration. Our
customers think of our company as a systems integration business
and it therefore it makes sense to reflect that in our title."
The newly named company will continue to be responsible for
the extremely successful £2 billion Merlin programme as well as
a multimillion Address Interpretation (AI) contract for The Post
Office.
The company is under contract to supply the Royal Navy with
44 Merlin Weapons Systems. Lockheed Martin UKIS will continue to
play a vital role on the Royal Navy Tomahawk Integration
programme and is one of four companies that have been selected
to undertake Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) studies for the MOD
Tactical UAV Integrated Product Team under the Smart Procurement
Initiative process.
The Lockheed Martin AI system is the cornerstone of The Post
Office's vision of a nationally integrated mail-processing
system. The AI system will improve customer satisfaction by
providing more effective and efficient service. The £130 million
project enhances The Post Office's capability to recognise
machine-printed and handwritten addresses, thereby increasing
the use of automation for handling letters, flats and ultimately
packets and parcels. The system also provides information about
mail pieces such as stamp and delivery classifications to
improve The Post Office's business performance.

Lockheed Martin UKIS employs more than 500 staff and
subcontractors at its sites at Portsmouth, Havant, Yeovil,
Cornwall and London and is one of several Lockheed Martin
businesses in the UK that are combined under Lockheed Martin UK
Ltd.
