MERLIN KICK-STARTS MCSP SUPPLIERS CONFERENCE
8 February 2006
A suppliers
conference for the Merlin Capability and Sustainment Plus (MCSP)
contract was kicked off in fine style as a Merlin Mk 1 Royal
Navy arrived at Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems, Havant.
Nearby Langstone
Road was closed as a precaution during landing and hundreds
of staff took the opportunity to see the Merlin as it came
to rest in the car park directly outside the Havant offices.
Local Radio and
newspapers were also on hand to cover the visit and were
joined by a class of budding engineers from Crookhorn School
in Waterlooville. The pupils were treated to a briefing from
the flight crew, then had the rare opportunity to climb on
board the helicopter itself.
Merlin Systems MD,
Bill Widner said: “It’s fantastic that we have been able to
have the Merlin visit us. It’s also a great opportunity for
the people here who work so hard on the Merlin to see the
fruits of their labour.”
The £750 million
MCSP contract will see 30 of the Merlin fleet receive a
series of upgrades designed to enhance their performance.
Upgrades will include improved computing power for the
mission system, more effective radar and sonics and
user-friendly interfaces.
The hydraulic
systems will also be replaced by fly-by-wire technology,
making the aircraft more agile and responsive. The upgrades
to the mission system and avionics will employ open systems
architecture to allow for future developments.
